Get Out of Our Own Way! - R.A.I.N
Getting 1 % better every day means making changes in our life. We all know If we continue to do what we’ve always done then we’ll continue to get what we’ve always got.
Then this means growing past our limitations and getting outside of our comfort zone which always feels a bit scary in the beginning. The fear of the unknown can cause us to get in our own way.
What does that mean? We can start telling our selves stories about ourselves that aren’t true. We can start repeating these limiting thoughts to ourselves over and over again in our heads until we actually start believing them. Just because we happen to think something or happen to believe something doesn’t actually make it true. If I am not careful, I can automatically start thinking …I’ll never get to be that happy…. I’ll never have a family like that… I’ll never be that successful… those people have some sort of innate ability that I’ll never be able to learn…there’s no way (insert whatever)
So, what do we do? How do we get out of our own way? Michele McDonald developed a practice called R.A.I.N
R- Recognize the thought when it pops up. When do I automatically start criticizing myself?
A - Allow it to exist, don’t fight, clinch or criticize its existence
I - Investigate – where does this come from? Did I have a past experience that this thought served me in ? Is it a story that a loved one has always told me and I just seem to always believe it?
N - Non identify or nurture – Understand that we learned this behavior because it worked somewhere along the way. We’re continuing to learn and we are continuing to grow. I am allowed to feel this way because it once was useful but it no longer serves me now. When we’re ready we can put it down and move on.
How can we use this tool to stay out of our own way?
